Branch Manager, Second Federal, a Division of Self-Help Federal Credit Union
Roman Ruiz is a branch manager for Second Federal a Division of Self-Help Federal Credit Union. With over 14 years in retail banking and mortgage lending experience, Roman is at the helm of a branch with an excess of $78 million in deposits and over 6,000 members. The branch is located in the heart of the Little Village community. Little Village is a community comprised mainly of Mexican immigrants that boasts the second highest grossing retail strip in the city of Chicago. As an organization, Second Federal is part of the largest Community Development Financial Institution in the country. It is an organization that “has 22 branches, nearly $600 million in assets, and serves over 70,000 people. [There is a commitment] to delivering safe and affordable savings and transparently-priced transaction accounts and a full suite of loans – small dollar, citizenship, unsecured consumer, auto, and mortgage – often to borrowers who could not access responsible services elsewhere.” Roman understands the struggles that many of the credit union members face, having grown up in a single parent home and emigrating to the U.S. from Mexico at nine years of age. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Northeastern Illinois University and his civic engagement includes being on the board of San Jose Obrero Mission and as a director for the Little Village Chamber of Commerce.
